Democrats have been scheming for months to try and get President Donald Trump impeached. On Wednesday, Democrats in the House of Representatives finally made their move, but it didn’t end well for them.

Fox News reported that the House of Representatives voted to reject the attempt to impeach Trump after Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green forced the vote. Green had done this by introducing two articles of impeachment against Trump. However, the House ended up shooting this impeachment bid down in a 364-58 vote.

While this is a victory for Trump supporters, it’s also disturbing that that many Democrats were willing to impeach Trump at this time. While the vote was expected to fail in the Republican-controled House, it served as a grim reminder of what can happen if Democrats get the majority next year.

Before the vote, Green gave a dramatic speech on the House floor in which he called Trump “unfit” for office and accused him of “high misdemeanors.”

“As I have said before, this is not about Democrats, it is about democracy,” Green wrote in a memo to his colleagues. “It is not about Republicans, it is about the fate of our Republic. May everyone vote their conscience knowing that history will judge us all.”

Green has been talking about impeaching Trump for months. Back in October, he filed impeachment articles that nearly forced a vote — until House Democratic leaders persuaded him to abandon the effort. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders fired back at the time by calling his efforts “problematic.”

In his memo to other representatives, Green didn’t allege “obstruction of justice” or reference the ongoing investigation into the 2016 presidential campaign’s connection with Russia. Instead, he talked about Trump’s alleged association with “White Nationalism, Neo-Nazism and Hate,” as well as “Inciting Hatred and Hostility,” as offenses worthy of impeachment.

“Friends, whether we like it or not, we now have a bigot in the White House who incites hatred and hostility,” Green wrote in a letter.
